Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Assessment
What is an RMR Test?
A person’s metabolism is the process of converting energy in food(calories) into energy that can be used by the body. A Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test is a scientific measurement of the amount of calories that are burned in order for an individual to sustain normal bodily functions (ie. heartbeat, breathing, digestion) at rest for 24 hours.
Why Test Your RMR?
Knowing your RMR will identify your unique daily minimum caloric intake; a vital piece of information for healthy weight loss or fueling your athletic performance. Your substrate utilization (percentage of burning fats and carbohydrates) at rest will also be calculated.
How an RMR Test Works:
ProActive utilizes KORR Medical Technology to analyze your metabolic data. Every calorie a person consumes requires oxygen to be converted into useful energy by our bodies. The KORR CardioCoach can measure the oxygen you consume by measuring the carbon dioxide you exhale. All air exhaled will be collected through the KORR system through a mouthpiece and hose attached to the CardioCoach machine (and nose-clip will also be applied to your nose to ensure all air is inhaled and exhaled through the mouth).
What to Expect with a Resting Metabolic Rate Test
Preparing for the RMR Test
-
Avoid high intensity exercise within 24 hours of test.
-
Avoid the use of stimulants (caffeine, nicotine) within 12 hours of test.
-
No food or drink (except water) 4 hours prior to test (an overnight fast is ideal).
During The Test
-
You will be invited to recline in a chair or sit in any comfortable position.
-
You should relax, close your eyes, if preferred, and keep lips sealed around the mouthpiece while breathing.
-
After 10-20 minutes, your metabolic data will be collected.
